About

NATAL CARE is a social enterprise with a FOR-PROFIT MOTIVE. The essence of this is to ensure sustainability. The latest update on our innovation is getting a suitable savings scheme structure for our end-users so that they can conveniently afford our delivery packs (Kits). We believe that the Introduction of a savings scheme for pregnant women to enable them purchase the delivery kits easily is very important. We are proposing that each month, they would pay a dollar to our Natal Care certified traditional birth attendant and before the 9th month they would have successfully saved enough to purchase the kits.

NATAL CARE is a social enterprise with a mission to reduce maternal and infant mortality from complications of pregnancy/delivery in rural Nigeria.

Project description

What problem are you trying to solve?

1. A big part of the problem is the lack of access to clean and affordable birth or Delivery kits in underserved communities;
2. Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is also a big problem; PPH is the excessive loss of blood following childbirth. PPH is the leading cause of maternal death in rural under-served communities in Nigeria;
3. We are also helping to solve problems faced by lactating mothers experiencing some difficulty in breastfeeding their babies due to low milk supply;
4. We are also addressing the lack of basic health information, making naïve women believe in fables and myths rather than real information regarding health care.

What is your solution to this problem?

By harnessing the power of mobile technology, we at NATAL; CARE deliver lifesaving health information and services to pregnant women and Nursing mothers on their mobile phones using their preferred indigenous language. Information such as dates for antenatal Checkups, immunization sessions reminders, vaccination schedules for the newborn babies and other post-natal care. We also develop basic, inexpensive Delivery Pack (Kit) containing essential supplies required at childbirth to ensure a clean, safe and hygienic delivery to help mothers and newborns avoid acquiring infections during childbirth especially in under-served rural communities. We help Mothers get immediate referrals to health centers and Doctors if symptoms indicate a health risk.

We also have Milk Booster cookies which are Lactation cookies that help increase breast milk for first-time mothers experiencing some difficulty in breastfeeding and low milk supply.
