The Spindle Award for Best Idea & The Spindle Summer Labs
At the Partos Innovation Festival in October, The Spindle rewarded the Innovation Award for ‘Best Idea 2017’ in international development to ZINC! The Spindle received 22 applications last May, of which the jury selected the ten best ideas to join The Spindle Summer Labs, which are currently up and running! In five intensive Fridays the design agencies of Marieke van Dijk, And the People and STBY worked closely with the teams to get as much progress. In September, the teams of Online Echoes (using user browsing data to connect for postive change), ZINC (create interoperable digital identities using Blockchain technology) and SkinApp (an app that supports healthcare workers to diagnose and treat skin diseases) were the last three standing. In the end, after intense deliberations, the jury picked ZINC because of the potential of its impact. Below you can find the project pages of these ideas with more detailed information.
The Spindle Summer Labs
You learn best when you have fun, are connected and relaxed. This is the philosophy behind The Spindle Summer Labs. In five fridays, the participants of the selected teams actively engage in Design Thinking as a process for problem-solving. With its main ingredients: creativity, ambidextrous thinking, teamwork, user-centeredness, curiosity and optimism. Besides sharing innovation insights and knowledge, the experienced Spring House team of facilitators provide creative support and coaching. Every part of the program is customized to the need of the selected teams. In the last Summer Lab, they presented their completed prototype.
An intense, inspirational and joyful summer, in which innovative teams develop their idea into a prototype in close collaboration with each other and a group of designers.
The Spindle Award
After The Spindle Summer Labs, the jury selected three nominees to pitch at the Partos Innovation Festival in October – out of which ZINC won the award for ‘Best Idea 2017’, 5000 euro of seed money, support in resource mobilisation and exposure to a big network of development organisations. This year, the jury really had a hard time deciding who should win. That is why they decided during the Festival to also grant prize money (2.500 and 1.000 euro’s respectively) to both 2nd and 3rd place teams (with thanks to Triodos Foundation and Stichting Haella)!

The Spindle will keep following all awarded and nominated applications. Please let us know if you want to connect with either one of them. We wish them the best of luck!
